If you or your family aren’t undocumented immigrants, you probably wouldn’t think that signing up for health care could hurt you. If members of your family are undocumented, though, it’s a different story. Even though federal officials have promised that information collected through health care registration won’t be used to pursue immigration cases, many people are still hesitant. That’s why local groups are working to assuage the fears of immigrants and sign them up for health care. Although undocumented immigrants are ineligible for health care subsidies, their U.S.-citizen children may qualify. And getting the foreign-born population on board is key for the success of the health care law, because a third of the foreign-born population in America is uninsured, according to Pew Research Center’s Hispanic Trends Project.
